What web browser should I use?

by Jay Email

With Google's new attempt to jump in the war of the browsers we need to reevaluate the question of what is the best Internet browser? Internet explorer was one of the first to jump in and is perhaps the most commonly used amongst windows users. Somewhere along the way Mozilla Firefox and Opera decided to jump in and now we have a new browser called Google Chrome.

Since most of us may have our experiences with the older browsers, I thought it would be a good idea to introduce the Google Chrome browser and talk a little about its pros and cons. There are many things we can compare with web browsers.

Web Browser Benchmarks

The first thing I would like to compare is the load time of the program. That is, the first time you access the program after it has been closed and taken off the computer's memory. Here are my results:

- Internet Explorer Version 7.0.6001.18000: 0.9 Seconds

- Mozilla Firefox Version 3.0.1: 1.8 Seconds

- Google Chrome (Beta): 0.3 Seconds

As you can see the initial load time of the browser does vary. A second might not matter too much to you but it is nice to have a browser that responds almost instantly.

Now I would like to test the amount of computer memory that is being used by each web browser:

- Internet Explorer 7: 16,548 K

- Mozilla Firefox 3: 28,892 K

- Google Chrome (Beta): 14,052 K

Clearly we can see that there is a difference in memory. It is important to note that when running an experiment we need to isolate variables. Each browser was currently viewing the Google homepage and each browser is not using any add-ons.

Note, that Google Chrome is still a beta program as of now. This means that the program is not officially complete. There are some things that the programmers feel need to be improved or added upon.

It seems as if Firefox had one its fame because of its added security features and add-ons. From what I have seen, it appears as if Google Chrome will used because of its efficiency. To really experience the difference in Chrome and a browser you are using now I would recommend trying it. I am currently using it and I am very satisfied with some of its features.

Many of its new features have just made the the browser more user friendly in comparison to other browsers. When downloading a file the browser will point to the bottom bar of the browser after which the file is displayed as downloading. In my opinion, I like this feature better than a download box that Firefox has.

Yet Google Chrome as of now is still a beta. And when a program is a beta it is questionable whether it is as secure as another browser. On the other hand, Google has came out with some remarkable computer applications and Chrome has started out exceeding many people's expectations.

Conclusion

I use Chrome and Firefox. Google Chrome has a very nice look and feel to it. However, Firefox has many plugins/addons that I love to use. Firefox does seem to have some memory usage problems but still retains its value with the addons.
