Should I upgrade to Windows Vista?
Windows Vista has been out for less than two years as of now and there are people still wondering if they should upgrade to Vista. There are reasons why and reasons not to. Many computer literate people give probably tell you not to because there are still some bugs to be worked out in it and that it takes a lot of memory.
Follow up:
Adding more computer memory for Vista
One thing that you have to consider is if your computer has enough memory. You can check the Microsoft web page about Windows Vista recommended system requirements to see. Home Basic is probably the cheapest version of Vista and it requires the least amount of computer memory (512mb). The other versions require at least 1gb of memory. A good rule of thumb that I have adopted is to get at least twice as much memory as is recommended because good preformance means a lot to mean.
Change Windows XP to look like Vista
So lets go over the question of why do you want to move over to Windows Vista. Some people think that the design is good looking and therefor they should get it. If you have Windows XP there is no need to do this because there are programs to change XP to look like Vista out there.
Getting older programs to run on Vista
Some people will consider going from XP to Vista a downgrade and in some ways it is. There are still compatibility issues with older programs that need to be worked out but most can be fixed with a few clicks. If you have a program that will not load up in Vista or will give you an error when you attempt to open it you can right click the executable file or shortcut and click properties. Now click on the compatibility tab and check the box that says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:". Many times it is Windows XP that you want to choose. Click apply, OK, and open up the program. Sometimes this does not work though.
If it does not work you are probably thinking about getting the newer version of the program so that it will work on Vista. There are some alternatives but may just make you frustrated. Such as installed both Vista and XP on your computer but at this point it is probably a good idea to just get the new program for Vista.
It is true that Windows Vista does have some bugs to work out because the operating system is far different from the other editions of windows. However if you are after performance, windows XP is the better choice and you should keep it. However Windows XP has a memory limit of about 2.75GB of RAM. If you find that you do need more memory then Vista probably is your choice of upgrade.
There are several alternatives that we have covered to see if you really need to upgrade. We have discussed changing Windows XP to look like Vista for people who like the look of Vista. We have discussed the incompatibility of some program on Windows Vista. We have also discussed the memory limit of Windows XP and the large amount of memory that Vista requires in comparison.
I currently use Windows Vista. However, I would like to go back to Windows XP because programs seem to crash on vista and I would do not like it. However I hope to see good updates for Windows Vista to correct these bugs.
