by Jay Email

red radio iconThere are some programs out there that allow an online audio/video stream to be recored onto your computer's hard drive so that you can watch it later. I sometimes listen to a show on an online station called KNRS. I sometimes cannot listen to a particular show when I want to so I set the recorder to record at a certain time.

www.wmrecorder.com offers a nice program to do just this. Once it is open, it will automatically identify audio streams and prompt you to start recording. Once you click stop, the .mp3 or .wav audio file will be located in the folder that it records to.

How do I test my Internet connection speed?

by Jay Email

Maybe your Internet Service Provider doesn't accurately give you a good estimate of how fast your Internet connection is. Some people misunderstand that an Internet connection speed of say 246kbps is not Kilobytes per second but kilobits per second.

If you think that your internet connection speed is about one tenth of what you thought it would be then this is why. A kilobit is relatively the same as one tenth of a kilobyte. Internet Service Proviers will advertize there connection speeds in megabits per second or in kilobits per second.

How do I change a video's file type?

by Jay Email

The process can be referred to as video conversion or encoding. When you upload videos to Youtube all the videos are converted to flash video format and the file extension at the end of the name is .flv. You may have files that end with the extension.mpg, .wmv, .avi, or .mov on your computer. Each of these files are video files that can all be converted to a different video format. My favorite program to use is Magic Video Converter because of its easy to understand layout. However it is not a free converter. Magic Video Converter.

How to split up files and upload them

by Jay Email

file archives

Most file hosting websites or even email accounts have a limit to as how big of a file you can upload. For Gmail it is around 20 megabytes. So to fix this problem many people will split up there files in what is called a file archive. A file archive is a file that holds a file or a bunch of files. Think of it as a filing cabinet where you may put all you documents and folders. Essentially it is another file full of files but can be split up evenly.

Many people will use applications such as Winrar or Winzip to do this. If you decide to install Winrar and after it is installed you can easily select files that you want to store in an archive by right-clicking them and click "add to archive...". A new window will show up were you have a bunch of options to choose from. All we are concerned about is the 'Split to volumes, types' drop-down menu.
